A 98-Degree Afternoon on Victory Boulevard
Last July, around 2:30 in the afternoon, our dispatch line rang. The caller — Maria — was barely holding it together. She’d pulled into the small strip mall parking lot off Victory Boulevard near Kester Avenue in Van Nuys to grab a prescription. Engine off, AC off, keys on the seat. And Benny, her four-year-old golden retriever, was still inside.
The doors had auto-locked.
