2. Lubricate twice a year, not with the wrong stuff
Skip WD-40 as a long-term fix. It displaces moisture but evaporates and can leave residue that attracts grit. Use a dry PTFE or graphite lubricant in the keyway and a marine-grade grease on the latch bolt. We tell folks to do it when they change their clocks each spring and fall, so it’s easy to remember.
3. Never force a stiff lock
This is the one that costs people the most money. When a key gets hard to turn, that’s the warning, not the problem. Forcing it snaps keys off in the cylinder or shears the internal mechanism, turning a simple repair into a full replacement plus possible gate damage. Stop, spray some penetrating oil, and let it sit before trying again gently.
4. Upgrade to exterior-rated hardware
A lot of the failed locks we pull are interior-grade units someone installed because they were cheap. Outdoor gates need hardware rated for weather exposure, ideally stainless steel or brass with a corrosion-resistant finish. It costs a little more up front and easily doubles the lifespan in our climate.
5. Keep the gate aligned
