The Call That Came in at 12:07 AM
Most of Alhambra is asleep by midnight on a Sunday. The boba shops on Valley Boulevard have closed up, the parking lots around the Alhambra Renaissance Plaza are empty, and even the late-night crowd at the 24-hour donut spot near Garfield has thinned out. That’s usually when our phone starts ringing.
On this particular Sunday, the call came in at 12:07 AM. A guy named Marcus was standing outside his apartment building off Main Street, near the old Edwards theater, holding a backpack and a half-eaten sandwich. He’d just finished a double shift at a warehouse out in Vernon, driven home half-asleep on the 710, and reached his front door before realizing his apartment keys were sitting in his locker back at work.
His roommate was visiting family in Sacramento. The leasing office wouldn’t open until 9 AM Monday. And Marcus had to be back at work at 6 AM.
“How fast can you actually get here?”
