Is a panic bar actually required by code for my exit?

It depends on occupancy and how many people use the door. If your Sylmar space is assembly, a school, or a high-traffic commercial exit, the fire code generally requires one-motion egress, which a panic bar provides. What's the difference between a fire-rated bar and a standard one?

A standard rim bar is built to let people out fast and works on most exterior exits. A fire-rated device has no mechanical dogging, so it always re-latches and holds the door shut during a fire, and it must be paired with a labeled fire door and a self-closer. If your door has a metal label on the hinge edge, it needs the fire-rated version. We carry both and check the label before we quote.

Can the panic bar set off an alarm if someone uses it?

Yes. We install bars with a built-in alarm kit, so an unauthorized push triggers a local horn, which is common for back exits in the warehouse areas near the San Fernando Airport where you want people out in an emergency but not strolling through after hours. It still allows free egress, it just announces it. We can wire it standalone or tie it into an existing system.

Will a crash bar fit my existing door, or do I need a new one?

Usually it fits. Most hollow-metal and aluminum storefront doors around Sylmar take a rim or vertical-rod device with no door replacement. The catch is older, racked, or out-of-square frames, common in the buildings out toward Sylmar Acres, where we may need a new strike or minor frame work so the bar latches clean.
