Can a washing machine actually kill a car key fob?
Yes, and usually it does. The water itself is survivable for a few seconds, but a 40-minute wash with detergent breaks down the silicone seal around the buttons, corrodes the circuit board, and shorts the transponder chip. The lithium coin battery also leaks once water gets past the gasket. Some basic fobs from the early 2000s sometimes come back to life after drying in rice for two or three days, but anything with proximity (push-to-start) features almost never recovers. If you drive a 2014-or-newer Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, or any European model, plan on a full replacement.

Three things, in this order:
- Don’t press any buttons. Pressing wet contacts is what shorts the board. Pop the battery out immediately if you can — a coin or fingernail usually does it.
- Open the fob fully and let it air dry on a paper towel, somewhere warm but not hot. Skip the hair dryer and the oven; the heat warps the case and melts solder joints.
- Find your spare and use that while you figure out the next step. If you don’t have a spare, call us before you’re stranded — we can usually get a same-day appointment if you book before 4 PM.

What if my car is at home but my key is gone entirely?
That’s called all-keys-lost, and yes, we handle it. Even with no working key, we can open the door, access the OBD port, and program a brand-new key from scratch. The price runs a bit higher because of the extra labor — usually $50 to $150 more than a standard replacement.
