Should I change the lock or just rekey it?

Rekeying keeps your existing hardware and changes the pins so old keys stop working — quick and cheap if the lock still turns smoothly. You want a full change when the lock is worn, sticky, damaged, doesn't fit the door, or when you're stepping up to a higher security grade. On older eastside homes with paint-caked or loose locks, a change is usually the better call. We'll look at what you have and tell you which one actually makes sense for your door.

Which lock grade do I need?

Locks are rated ANSI Grade 1, 2, or 3. Grade 3 is builder-basic — fine for an interior or low-traffic door. Grade 2 handles most LA homes and apartments well. Grade 1 is commercial-strength, worth it on a front door facing a busy street or after a break-in on the block. We stock Grade 1 and 2 deadbolts and can add an anti-drill, anti-bump cylinder if security is your main concern.

How long does a lock change take?

A single deadbolt or knob swap is usually 15 to 20 minutes once we've confirmed the fit. A full entry set, or several doors keyed alike, runs closer to 30 to 45 minutes per opening. Older LA doors that need the bore widened or a mortise pocket adjusted add a little time, but we handle that on the spot rather than sending you off to a shop.

Can all my doors be set to one key?

Yes. If the locks share a brand and keyway — or we swap them to a matching set — we can key every exterior door to a single key. That means one key for the front, back, and side gate instead of a fat ring. Changing several locks at once is the easiest time to do this, so mention it when you call and we'll bring matched hardware.
