Memorial Day weekend kicked off, and our phones started ringing harder than usual. We rolled out to a house off Fremont Avenue last Tuesday — homeowner came back from a quick trip to Vegas to find her front door swinging open, the strike plate ripped clean out of the frame. The wood was splintered down to the studs. Police had already taken the report. She called us at 11pm.
When a door’s been kicked, you’re dealing with two problems. The lock itself usually survives — the deadbolt didn’t fail, the wood around it did. We replace the cylinder, install a longer strike plate (3-inch screws into the framing stud, not the jamb), and reinforce the frame so a second kick doesn’t go through.

Test Every Lock Before You Leave
Sounds basic. Half the homeowners we visit have at least one lock that doesn’t fully engage anymore. The bolt hits the strike plate slightly off and people just push the door harder. That’s a 30-second fix that changes how secure your house actually is.
Don’t Hide a Spare Outside
The fake rock. Under the mat. Above the door frame. Every burglar in the San Gabriel Valley knows these spots. If you need spare access for a house-sitter, give them a code on a smart lock or leave a key with a neighbor on the block.
What About Your Safe?

After the Break-In — What Insurance Wants
File the police report first. Insurance won’t process a break-in claim without it. Then take photos of the damage before we repair anything — the splintered frame, the busted strike plate, the door from outside and inside. We email an itemized invoice that lists the parts replaced, which most carriers accept without follow-up questions.
