The Garcia Family’s First Week in Alhambra: Installing a Fireproof Safe Off Fremont Avenue

May 27, 2026 · 4 min read

A new set of keys, a stack of important papers, and nowhere to put them

Daniel called us on a Tuesday morning, three days after he and his wife Marisol moved into a 1940s bungalow off Fremont Avenue, a few blocks south of Almansor Park. They had spent the weekend unpacking boxes, and Daniel found himself staring at a manila folder on the kitchen counter — the grant deed, both their passports, the title to Marisol’s car, their marriage certificate, and his grandfather’s gold pocket watch wrapped in a handkerchief. Everything that mattered, sitting in a folder next to the coffee maker.

“I keep thinking about that brush fire that hit the hills last summer,” he told me on the phone. “And honestly, we don’t know the neighborhood yet. I want a real fireproof safe, bolted down, somewhere a thief wouldn’t think to look.”

That’s a conversation we have a lot with new Alhambra homeowners. The houses around here — especially the older ones near Garfield, Main Street, and over by the Alhambra Historical Society — have great bones but tricky floor plans for safe placement. So we set up a same-day visit.

The walk-through: picking the right safe for the right spot

Our tech, Roman, pulled up to Daniel’s place around 2 PM. Before talking products, he did what we always do — a quick walk-through of the home. He looked at the closet framing in the primary bedroom, checked the garage slab, and took a peek at the hallway floor near the linen closet.

A few things stood out:

The bedroom closet was the obvious spot — but not the best one

Most homeowners assume the bedroom closet is where the safe goes. It’s also the first place a burglar checks. Roman suggested the linen closet in the hallway instead, where the floor joists run perpendicular and could handle a 250-lb fireproof safe bolted directly into a stud and the subfloor.

Fire rating mattered more than burglary rating, given what Daniel needed

Daniel mostly cared about documents and a small heirloom — not cash or jewelry collections. Roman walked him through the difference between a UL-rated 1-hour fireproof safe versus a 2-hour rating, and explained why a composite safe (fire + burglary protection in one body) made more sense for his situation than two separate units.

They settled on a 1.8 cubic foot composite safe with a 1-hour fire rating at 1700°F, an electronic keypad with a backup key override, and pre-drilled anchor holes in the base.

Installation day: two hours, no drama

We came back Thursday morning with the safe. Roman and his partner Mike carried it in through the back door — easier than navigating the narrow front hallway in that bungalow — and got to work.

Installation went like this:

Total time on site: about two hours, including the cleanup. Daniel put his folder of documents inside before we even left.

What we tell every new Alhambra homeowner about safes

If you just moved into a place near Granada Park, off Atlantic Boulevard, or anywhere in the older parts of Alhambra, here’s the short version of what Roman told Daniel:

You can read more about our service, or check out the full range of Alhambra locksmith services we offer. A lot of folks who get a safe also end up asking us about for their front and side doors — the two pair well, especially in older homes where the original deadbolts are tired.

Thinking about a safe for your own place?
