Why did the Alhambra fire inspector cite me for a missing panic bar?
California Building Code and the Fire Code require panic hardware (also called exit devices or crash bars) on doors that serve as exits from assembly areas, educational spaces, and high-hazard occupancies. If your space holds 50 or more people — think a banquet room on Main Street, a yoga studio near Almansor Park, or a private school in the Emery Park area — the inspector is looking for a door that opens with a single push, no twisting, no thinking. A standard lever or deadbolt fails that test. That’s almost always the citation.

Not every door — only the ones an inspector considers a required exit. The rule of thumb we use on walkthroughs:
- Any door in the path of travel out of an assembly space (restaurants, bars, churches, theaters like the old Edwards Renaissance area, event halls).
- Doors serving an occupant load of 50+ in business or mercantile spaces.
- Doors on rooms storing hazardous materials, regardless of headcount.

Can I just buy a panic bar at the hardware store and install it myself?
You can buy one. Passing re-inspection is the harder part. Fire-rated doors require a UL-listed device, the strike has to align within tight tolerances, and on doors with closers the latch has to engage every time the door swings shut on its own. We’ve been called to fix DIY installs on Valley Boulevard where the bar worked fine — but the door no longer latched, which is its own fire code violation. California also requires C-28 licensing for commercial lock work, which matters if your insurance carrier ever asks.
What about the warranty?
