He found us, we drove out, cut and programmed a new fob in his driveway in about 45 minutes, and he paid roughly half. That call is not unusual. Why is the dealer charging so much for a push-to-start key?
Dealers price three things into that quote: the blank fob (marked up two to three times over wholesale), the labor to program it through their factory tool, and the tow if your car cannot start. They also build in the trip to their parts counter and the wait time. A mobile locksmith skips all of that. We carry the blanks, the cutting equipment, and the programmer in the van. For most push-to-start vehicles in Alhambra, our all-in price runs $250 to $475 depending on the make and year. German cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) sit at the top of that range. Can a locksmith really program a push-to-start fob, or do I have to go to the dealer?
Yes, we can. The myth that only the dealer can pair a smart key died about ten years ago. We have the same diagnostic equipment the dealer uses — sometimes newer. The handful of vehicles that genuinely still require a dealer trip are mostly newer Land Rovers, some Volvo XC models from the last two years, and a few specific Audi trims. For everything else made for the US market, we can cut the emergency blade and program the fob to your car on site. If your car is one of the rare exceptions, we will tell you on the phone before we drive out — no wasted trip fee.
How fast can you get to me in Alhambra?

The process takes longer than adding a spare — usually 45 to 90 minutes on site — but it costs far less than a tow plus a dealer visit. If you do still have one working fob, programming a spare is faster and cheaper, so do that before you lose the last one.
Is a push-to-start key the same as a smart key?
The terms get used interchangeably, and for most cars they are the same physical device — a proximity fob you keep in your pocket while the car detects it and lets you press the start button. There are small differences in how the older smart key systems pair versus the newer push-to-start setups, which matters for programming but not for you as the driver. If you are unsure what your car uses, the vehicle’s manual will say “Smart Key System” or “Intelligent Access” or similar. We also handle for the older proximity systems on the same call.
What should I have ready when I call?
Three things speed up the visit and the quote: the year, make, and model of the car; your driver’s license matching the car’s registration (we have to verify ownership before programming a key — no exceptions); and the car itself accessible, not locked in a closed garage.
