The Call From Ms. Ramirez
It was a Tuesday morning in early March when Patricia Ramirez called us. She’s the vice principal at a mid-sized K-8 school off Burbank Boulevard, just a few blocks east of Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood. Her voice had that specific exhaustion you hear from someone who’s been dealing with a problem for way too long.
“We have 47 classrooms, a library, two computer labs, a teacher’s lounge, and six supply closets,” she told us. “Every single one has its own key. The Site Visit

Nice campus — two main buildings, single story, built in the late ’80s. The kind of place where the locks had been replaced piecemeal over 30 years, so you had a mix of Schlage, Kwikset, and a couple of old Corbin Russwin cylinders that probably came with the original construction.
Danny walked every hallway with Ms. Ramirez and the head custodian, a guy named Ernesto who’d been there 18 years. Ernesto had opinions — good ones. He knew which doors stuck, which locks were about to fail, and which rooms needed restricted access (the server room, the records office, the nurse’s station).
Designing the Key Hierarchy

Danny and two other guys from our crew spent three days on campus — pulling old cylinders, pinning new ones to spec, testing every combination, and labeling everything with a system Ms. Ramirez could actually manage going forward.

The Handoff
On the last day, Danny sat down with Ms. Ramirez and Ernesto in the front office and walked them through a one-page key management chart. Who gets what level, how to request replacements, what to do if a key is lost (spoiler: it’s a lot cheaper to replace one change key than to rekey a whole building when you have a proper hierarchy in place).
Patricia told us that by the time teachers came back from break, three of them specifically thanked her for the switch. One said she’d been carrying nine keys for three years and now she carried two.

Audit before you buy. Know how many doors, what brands you have, and which locks are too worn to repin. Some need full replacement.
Think about future growth. A good master key system has expansion capacity — if you add a portable classroom next year, the system should accommodate it without redesigning everything.
Restricted keyways matter. If anyone can walk into a MinuteKey kiosk and copy your master, the whole system is compromised. Invest in restricted blanks.
Document everything. A master system is only as good as the records behind it. Know who has which keys at all times.
