What New Construction Lock Installation Actually Costs in Alhambra (2026 Pricing Guide)

May 26, 2026 · 3 min read

A builder finishing a four-unit project near Fremont Avenue called us last month with a fair question: one locksmith quoted $400 for the whole job, another came in at $1,800. Same doors, same neighborhood, wildly different numbers. We walked him through where that gap actually comes from, and the same breakdown applies whether you’re closing out a single-family build off Valley Boulevard or a small commercial space near the 710.

What You’re Actually Paying For

New construction lock installation has three cost layers: the hardware itself, the labor to install and key it, and the keying strategy you choose. Get any one of those wrong and the budget swings hundreds of dollars.

For a typical Alhambra residential build with 6 to 10 doors, expect the full installed cost to land somewhere between $90 and $280 per opening. That’s a wide range, and the spread is real — a builder-grade Kwikset deadbolt on a pre-drilled door is genuinely a 15-minute job, while a Schlage Encode smart deadbolt on a custom solid-core door needs proper boring, strike alignment, and Wi-Fi setup.

Hardware Cost Breakdown

Labor and Service Call

Most local shops, ours included, run a service call fee of $35–$75 for new construction work in Alhambra, then $35–$60 per door for standard installation. Pre-drilled doors are quicker. Solid-core or older retrofit doors that need boring run higher because we’re cutting into the door itself. If your contractor framed everything cleanly and the doors arrived prepped, you’ll be on the low end.

The Process, Start to Finish

Here’s how a typical new construction job runs when we handle :

1. Walkthrough and Door Count

We come out, count exterior versus interior doors, check the door prep (most builders use 2-1/8″ cross-bore, 1″ edge-bore — standard), and discuss which doors get deadbolts versus knob-only. A homeowner on a quiet street near Almansor Park typically wants deadbolts only on exterior doors; a duplex owner near Main Street usually wants every unit’s interior door secured too.

2. Keying Strategy

This is where money gets saved or wasted. Three options:

3. Installation Day

A skilled tech installs 8–12 doors in roughly 3–4 hours. We dry-fit each lockset, check strike alignment (this is what separates a $50 install from a sticky door six months later), pin cylinders to spec, and test every key in every lock before leaving. You get a labeled key tag set and, on master systems, a written pinning chart.

When Lock Installation Is the Right Call (vs. Rekey)

For brand-new construction, installation is your only option — there’s nothing to rekey because no locks exist yet. But if you’re a buyer closing on a recently completed spec home where the builder already installed hardware, ask before defaulting to full replacement. A runs roughly $20–$30 per cylinder and gives you brand-new keys without replacing perfectly good hardware. We tell roughly a third of new-home buyers to rekey instead of replace — it saves them several hundred dollars.

Where replacement makes more sense: builder used the cheapest possible hardware (loose, gritty cylinders), you want to upgrade to smart locks or higher grades, or any door doesn’t have a deadbolt and you want one added.

Getting an Honest Quote

Two things to ask any locksmith quoting a new construction job: does the price include keying (some shops charge separately), and is the service call rolled in or added on top? A real quote spells both out. We’ve been doing Alhambra locksmith services long enough to know that surprise line items are the fastest way to lose a repeat customer.

If you’ve got a project coming up — anywhere from the homes east of Fremont to the commercial corridor along Valley Boulevard — give us a call at (818) 398-9391 and we’ll come look at the doors before quoting. Same-day walkthroughs most weekdays.
