Spring in LA Means New Doors, New Keys, and a Fresh Start
Every March through May, our phones light up with calls from folks who just closed on a bungalow in Highland Park, signed a lease in Mar Vista, or finally replaced that warped front door that’s been sticking since the 2023 rains. Spring is the busiest stretch of the year for lock installation in Los Angeles, and honestly, it makes sense. Warmer weather, moving trucks parked along Sunset, estate sales in Hancock Park, and contractors finishing remodels they started back in January.

Why a New Door Needs More Than Just Any Lock
Builders and big-box stores will sell you a pre-drilled door with a standard 2-3/8″ backset and a 1″ face bore. That’s fine for a starter lock, but LA has its own quirks. Coastal homes in Venice and Playa del Rey deal with salt air that eats cheap brass finishes in under two years. Hillside properties in Laurel Canyon and Los Feliz shift with the soil, so a door that was plumb in April might rub in October. And anywhere east of La Brea, the afternoon sun warps hollow-core doors until the strike plate no longer lines up.
The lock you pick has to account for all of that. We usually recommend a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt from Schlage, Kwikset Signature, or Medeco depending on the block. For a craftsman in Pasadena adjacent neighborhoods, a matte black Emtek pairs well with the original hardware. For a security-first install in Koreatown or Downtown, we’ll push toward a high-security cylinder with restricted keyways.
Measure Twice, Drill Once
If the door came from a yard in Sun Valley or a custom shop in the Arts District, double-check the backset before ordering hardware. Half the service calls we run on new doors involve a mismatched bore — the homeowner bought a 2-3/4″ lock for a 2-3/8″ door, or the deadbolt sits too high and hits the frame. A quick measurement saves a trip and a return to Home Depot on Sunset.

Always Rekey or Replace After a Move
You have no idea how many copies of the old key are floating around. Previous tenants, cleaners, dog walkers, the handyman who worked on the kitchen in 2019. A new install on move-in day is the cleanest reset. If the existing hardware is decent, a rekey works too — we handle both.
Watch Out for June Gloom Swelling
That marine layer that rolls in from Santa Monica and Venice every morning in late spring adds moisture to wood doors. If your new door is solid wood, wait a couple weeks after hanging before the final strike plate adjustment. The door will settle, and your alignment will hold longer.

If the door is fiberglass or steel, call us. One wrong drill and you’ve got a very expensive paperweight.
