About the service

Professional Lock Installation in Los Angeles

Most lock installs we handle in Los Angeles fall into two camps. Either someone hung a brand-new door and there is no hole bored for the hardware at all, or there is a knob but no deadbolt, and the owner finally got tired of a single lock holding the place. A lot of the older housing stock around Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights has thick, true wood doors that take hardware beautifully once they are bored correctly. Newer infill builds and flipped duplexes are a different story.

The job is not just drilling a hole. On a door that never had a deadbolt, the bore has to line up with the existing knob, the cross-bore for the latch has to be square, and the jamb has to be cut so the bolt seats fully. Done wrong, the lock works for a week and then binds. We do this every day, so we set it once and it stays right.

What to expect

What Happens When You Call Us in Los Angeles

When we arrive, the first thing we do is look at the door and the frame together, because the frame is usually where break-ins actually fail. A kick-in does not snap the lock; it splits the jamb where two short screws hold the strike plate into soft pine. So before we talk hardware, we check what the door is made of, whether there is room for a deadbolt above the knob, and how the frame is anchored.

For a fresh bore on a new door, we mark with a jig, drill the face bore and the edge cross-bore, then test-fit before anything is mortised. We carry Grade 2 and Grade 1 deadbolts on the van and can usually finish a standard install same visit. Coverage runs from Downtown and Little Tokyo out through the 90001 to 90006 zips, and we work nights too. Call (818) 398-9391.

Real Questions from Los Angeles Customers

asked by actual customers · from our dispatch log
How much would it cost to replace two locks on my security screen door so I could have one key?
For replacing two locks and keying them alike, it starts around $59 per lock plus hardware — the exact price depends on the type of screen-door locks you have.
I have three doors with padlocks — two are Schlage and one says Emtek. I want two of them rekeyed so they all use the same key. Can I drop by if you have a shop?
Rekeying two padlocks to match starts around $59 each, but we need to see them for the exact price — some padlocks are trickier than others. We’re mobile, so we come to you — no shop to visit.
I need three locks rekeyed at my home and I don’t have the original key — can you still do it?
No original key is no problem — we can still rekey them. Starting around $59 per lock, with the exact price confirmed on-site.
Would it be cheaper to wait until morning?
The price is the same day or night — no extra charge for after-hours work.
Do you accept American Express?
Yes — we accept Amex, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and cash.

FAQ

Can you add a lock to a door that has no hole in it?

Yes, that is one of the most common calls we get on new and replaced doors across LA. We bore the face hole for the lock body and the edge cross-bore for the latch using a jig so everything lines up. If you want a deadbolt above an existing knob, we bore a second hole at the right spacing. Solid wood doors take this without trouble; on hollow-core we will tell you upfront if it needs a different approach.

What deadbolt grade should I actually get?

Deadbolts are rated Grade 3, 2, or 1, with Grade 1 being the toughest. For most LA homes we install Grade 2, which holds up well for residential use and is what we stock on the van. If your door faces the street or you have had a break-in attempt, step up to Grade 1. We will show you both and let you feel the difference before you decide.

Why do you talk about strike plate reinforcement so much?

Because in a kick-in the lock almost never fails first, the frame does. A standard strike plate is held by two short screws into thin trim. We swap it for a reinforced plate anchored with three-inch screws that reach the framing stud behind the jamb. On the older split-prone door frames you find around Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights, this single upgrade does more for security than the lock itself.

Should I install a smart lock or a traditional deadbolt?

Both work, and we install either. A keyed deadbolt is simpler, never needs batteries, and is what we recommend for a back door or a rental. A smart lock is nice for a main entry if you want keypad or phone access for family. Whichever you pick, the install fundamentals are the same: the bore has to be right and the strike has to be reinforced, or the smart features sit on a weak door.

Lock Installation Checklist for LA Homeowners

Before you install new locks — or replace old ones — run through these quick checks to make sure you’re actually improving your security.

  • Check your door frame first. A deadbolt means nothing if the frame is rotted or the strike plate has half-inch screws. Swap them for 3-inch screws that reach the stud. This alone stops most kick-ins — something LAPD crime prevention officers recommend across Hollywood and South LA.
  • Match the lock grade to your risk. Ground-floor units in dense neighborhoods like Koreatown or Westlake need ANSI Grade 1 deadbolts minimum. Upper-floor condos in Brentwood can get by with Grade 2.
  • Don’t forget secondary doors. Garage-to-house doors and side gates in neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks and Encino are the entry points burglars actually prefer.
  • Test the lock before the installer leaves. Lock and unlock it ten times from both sides. Check that the bolt extends at least one inch.
  • Keep a record. Save the lock brand, model, and key code somewhere secure — not taped to the door frame.
