Keypad, card, or fob – which one makes sense for my place?

Depends on headcount and turnover. A small office in central LA with five steady staff does fine on a keypad, though you should change the code when someone leaves. Once you are over a dozen people, or you have part-timers and vendors coming and going, cards or fobs win because you revoke one credential instead of re-coding the door for everybody. Many shops we wire near Lincoln Heights run a keypad on the back door and readers up front.

Does the system have to tie into the fire alarm?

If we put a maglock on an exit door, yes – it must release when the fire alarm trips and when someone hits the request-to-exit, no exceptions. That is fire and building code in Los Angeles and it is what keeps people from being trapped. Electric strikes on storefront doors are often fail-secure and don't tie in the same way. We sort out which doors need the integration during the walkthrough and wire them correctly.

Someone lost their card – can we shut it off?

Yes, and that is the whole point of going to credentials. Log into the system, find that card, disable it, done in under a minute, no locksmith visit needed. The reader stops accepting it immediately and your audit log still shows everywhere it was used before. We show you exactly how to do this at handoff so you are not waiting on us when it happens at closing time.

Do you run the wiring, or just supply the hardware?

We do the whole thing – readers, keypads, strikes, maglocks, power, and all the low-voltage cable run through the walls and ceiling. On the older brick and plaster buildings around Boyle Heights and Little Tokyo that takes some care, since you can't just fish a wire anywhere.
