About the service

Professional Transponder Key Programming in Los Angeles

You paid to have a key cut at a kiosk or hardware counter, it slides into your Camry or Civic and turns the ignition, and then nothing. The engine cranks and dies, or the security light keeps blinking. That is not a bad cut. On any car built since the late 1990s, the plastic head hides a transponder chip, and the immobilizer around the ignition has to recognize that chip's code before the computer allows fuel and spark.

We see it constantly on the older Toyotas and Hondas packed along the curbs of Boyle Heights and Lincoln Heights. The blade opens your door; the chip is what the car is actually waiting for.

What to expect

What Happens When You Call Us in Los Angeles

When we pull up, the first move is the OBD-II port under the dash. We read your VIN and immobilizer type to answer one question: does your chip clone onto a blank, or does it have to be written into the car's computer? Older fixed-code chips clone in minutes. Encrypted ones — a lot of Toyotas and newer models — have to be programmed, sometimes with a PIN pulled from the car.

We do this curbside — off the 10, the 110, or the 101, in a driveway or an apartment carport. A spare or clone usually takes 20 to 40 minutes; all-keys-lost on a newer car runs longer. Call (818) 398-9391 with the year, make, and model so we arrive with the right blanks.

Real Questions from Los Angeles

asked by actual customers · from our dispatch log
I need a key made for my 2017 Hyundai Sonata — is it going to be more than $300?
For a regular turn key on a Sonata it starts around $159, so well under $300. The exact price depends on the key type once the tech sees it.
We don’t have an extra key or anything — will you be able to make one?
Yes — we make keys from scratch, no spare needed. The key is cut and programmed right at the car.
My key is too worn to open the door and I need a new one — would it be cheaper to wait until morning?
The price is the same day or night — no extra charge for after-hours.
I just got a Kia Sportage and it only came with one fob. I purchased a blank fob — can someone program it?
No problem — a tech comes to you and programs the fob you already have, right at the car.
Do you accept American Express?
Yes — Amex, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and cash.

FAQ

Why does my newly cut key turn but the car won't start?

The cut is fine — it's the chip. Since the late 1990s, your key's plastic head carries a transponder that the immobilizer has to read before it releases fuel and spark. A blank that was only cut to shape has no matching chip code, so the engine cranks or stalls. We program or clone the chip so the car recognizes it.

Can you just clone my key, or does it need programming?

Depends on the chip. Older fixed-code transponders — common on 1990s and early-2000s Hondas and Toyotas around the eastside — clone straight onto a blank in minutes and don't use up a key slot. Encrypted, rolling-code chips can't be cloned; those we program to the car through the OBD port, sometimes with a security PIN. We check which one you have before cutting.

What is an immobilizer, exactly?

It's the anti-theft system built into almost every car sold in the U.S. since the late '90s. A small antenna ring around the ignition reads the chip in your key; if the code doesn't match what the car's computer stored, it blocks the engine from starting. That's why a hot-wire or a plain cut key won't move these cars — and why the key has to be paired electronically.

I lost every key to my car — can you still make one?

Yes, that's an all-keys-lost job. With no working key to copy, we read the car's immobilizer data or pull the security code, cut a mechanical blade to the lock so we can get in and turn the ignition, then generate and program a brand-new key from scratch. It takes longer than a spare, but you won't need a tow to the dealer. We do it curbside across LA.

Spring Tips: Transponder Key Programming in Los Angeles

Moving to a new place this spring? If you just signed a lease in Silver Lake, Echo Park, or anywhere across LA, don’t forget about your car keys. Previous owners or roommates may have had spare transponder keys programmed to your vehicle. Get your transponder keys reprogrammed to ensure only your keys start your car.

Spring cleaning your keychain? That old spare transponder key rattling around your junk drawer might have a dead chip. Before you toss it, bring it in — reprogramming is almost always cheaper than cutting a brand-new key from scratch.

Buying a used car this season? Private sales along Ventura Blvd and across the Valley often come with only one key. Dealerships charge $300+ for transponder programming. A mobile locksmith comes to you — whether you’re parked in Glendale or downtown on Figueroa — and handles it for a fraction of the cost.

Headed to Dodger Stadium or Coachella? Losing a transponder key far from home is a nightmare. Program a spare now and keep it somewhere safe. Need it done fast? Call us at (818) 398-9391 — we come to you anywhere in LA County.
